'HALO' is a new technique known as Haemorrhoidal Artery Ligation Operation.
This method has proven to be a simple, safe, highly effective, and relatively painless method of treating haemorrhoids in our experience with 1,400 patients over the past 24 months.

It was in 1995 (“The American Journal of Gastroenterology”) when Dr. Morinaga et al of Japan reported for the 1st time about a method  called HAL (Haemorrhoidal Artery Ligation), to treat the haemorrhoidal disease. Today, the A.M.I. HAL-Proctoscope with an integrated ligation window, light transmission and a built in Doppler Ultrasound Transducer, is used to identify the haemorrhoidal arteries and to ligate these arteries through the integrated ligation window.

The Procedure:
  1. The patient is positioned in Lateral Recumbent or in a Lithotomy Position.

  2. Ultra Sound Gel is put on the A.M.I. HAL-Proctoscope before it is fully trans-anally inserted and slowly / gently turned until a typical Doppler sound of arterial blood flow can be heard.

  3. The identified arteries are ligated in a distance 3 to 4 cm proximal to the Dentate Line through the ligation window of the A.M.I.HAL-Doppler Proctoscope, thus reducing the blood inflow to the inner haemorrhoidal plexus.
The enlarged haemorrhoidal piles do start to shrink (this is sometimes already recognized during surgery) and they are usually not present anymore, when the first post operative check is done, 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

Meanwhile, this new, minimal, highly efficient and pain free method is offered to patients by several hundred hospitals and surgeons throughout Europe. First reports from well known centres and surgeons are very promising and convincing:

  • Success rate: 95% on Stage II and III haemorrhoids, 2 years of follow up.
  • Significantly  less pain, also post operative
  • No anaesthesia required
  • Procedure time approx. 20 min.
  • Can be applied on “Goligher” Stage II to IV haemorrhoids
  • Very effective on bleeding haemorrhoids
